Peak Climbing in Nepal - Island Peak Climbing

General Information

Island peak also known as 'Imja Tse' is one of the most popular trekking peaks in the Himalayas of eastern Nepal. The peak was named Island Peak in 1951 by Eric Shipton's party since it seems as an island in a sea of ice when viewed from Dingboche. It was first climbed in 1956 by a Swiss team as a training exercise in preparation for Mount Everest and Lhotse. There are two options for climbing this peak, one is a climb starting from a base camp at 5,087 metres called Pareshaya Gyab and the other is a popular high camp at around 5, 600 metres. Island peak climbing is regarded somewhat difficult due to steep climbing. Mount Everest is only mere 10 km away to the north, the view is blocked by the massive wall of Lhotse.
